This is my second go at this month’s newsletter. After rereading my first draft, I realized it was way too pessimistic and gloomy, and nobody needs more of that in their lives. If you want that, go doom scroll for 10-minutes. I don’t want my little corner of your attention to be more grey clouds. So, come to the cottage with me instead.
Here are things I’m loving this month that I think you’ll enjoy too: updates on A Song on Salt Air, and a little snippet of a new project I’m working on.
Remember, joy is an act of resistance!
Every single Heated Rivalry Meme on the internet … need I say more?
V for Vendetta (the graphic novel)
I’ve dabbled with graphic novels in the past, but I wouldn’t consider myself an expert. There are so many amazing stories out there, and I haven’t even scratched the surface.
I’ve been watching Allan Moore’s writing masterclass on YouTube (if you haven’t seen it, he’s great!), and I realized I’ve never actually read any of his books.
So I picked up a copy of V for Vendetta, which is probably his most popular work. I’ve seen the movie, but I must have fallen asleep or something because I didn’t remember any of the plot.
I had no idea when I picked it up how relevant it would be to our current political and social climate in the US. As a dystopian vigilante story written four decades ago in London, it’s eerily spot on to today’s events.
I just finished the collected volume, and now I’m getting ready to watch the movie. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend reading or watching it right now. You might have a newfound appreciation for V’s mission. (the graphic novel)

Wuthering Heights
It’s been several years since I read Wuthering Heights, but it’s one of my favorite books. It’s one of those books I read as a teenager that made a huge impression on me and probably influenced a lot of my reading tastes. I love a gothic story and setting (ahem, A Song on Salt Air).
I don’t typically reread books. But it seemed like a good time to do so. I’d forgotten a lot. Many of my memories of the plot actually come from the mini-series adaptation with Tom Hardy as Heathcliff.
In defense of the upcoming movie adaptation:
At first, I was upset by how they seem o be portraying the romance. Wuthering Heights, the book, is not a classic romance story. In many ways, it’s a romance cautionary tale.
HOWEVER, I was a teenager the first time I read it, and I’d be lying if I didn’t romanticize it then in the same way the director is intentionally doing. I’ll be in the theater along with everyone else, happy to step back into my teenage interpretation and very misguided romanticization of Heathcliff.
Shoresy
I, like many others, felt a void open up at the end of Heated Rivalry, sad that I will never be able to watch it for the first time again.
But, I was excited to find out that the director of Heated Rivalry is the same director of one of my already favorite shows, Shoresy!
It’s not quite the same (no gay hockey players, unfortunately), but it has the same heart and a great soundtrack. The next season comes out at the end of February! (Yay!)
I FINALLY WATCHED SINNERS
I’ve been wanting to watch Sinners for months, ever since it was in theaters. I don’t know why it kept getting put off, but I finally hit play.
Going in, I knew it was about vampires, but it was such a fresh take on the classic monster. After watching an alarming amount of Vampire Diaries and reading a lot of vampire romance books this past year, it was kind of satisfying to see vampires actually vilified with zero redemption instead of portrayed as some kind of reluctant hero.
With that said, I’ve never seen or read vampires portrayed the same way as in Sinners, and I’ve never seen music play such a part in it. It was so good. I might watch it again.
The Winter months demand a certain kind of soundtrack: dark, resonant, and warm. This is my bread and butter. I looove a gloomy track with haunting vocals, and it just hits differently in the middle of winter when seasonal depression is at its strongest and winter storms threaten to take out the entire East Coast.
These artists/albums scratch the itch:
Emma Ruth Rundle (Marked for Death)
Chelsea Wolfe (She Reached Out To She Reaches Out To She, and Hiss Spun)
Daughter (If You Leave)
Updates? Lol.
Ok, no, it’s not that bad. I’m painstakingly moving through revisions, which has turned into another round of line edits. I need to get on an editor’s schedule to hold myself accountable to a specific timeframe. I think because I’m mentally done with this story, the final part of the process is painful. I’m ready to move on to the next creative project, but at the same time, I’m holding onto this one in a very unhelpful way.
If anyone knows of an editor currently accepting new authors, please reach out! I am on the search, but I’d love to work with someone who comes recommended.
To keep myself from going insane through these revisions, I’m allowing myself a little bit of creative time to draft my next story, which will be very different and very fun.
So, here’s a little snippet of what I’m working on because why not?
